I am Cj de Silva. Some might recognize me as the Promil Kid. I love to paint and illustrate. Advertising is not just a day job for me. Film, moving pictures and music are my escapes.

LEGS!
My second attempt at learning Bruce Timm’s technique. I wish to show everything but I kinda want to make a series out of this!
By the way, it took me 3 studies/sketches to get the confidence of actually trying it in colour.
STEP 1: Pencil sketch.
STEP 2: Watercolour underpainting
STEP 3: Values using coloured pencil (not watercolour pencils because they’re real soft)

Girl 2 of 8. Series. Initial Sketch.
Been quite obsessed with Bruce Timm’s style for quite some time now. It’s been almost a decade since I tried a new drawing style. (yabang leche) Testing feels challenging. Can’t quite immitate his technique perfectly yet but I think it’s a bit close! But I think I kinda like how I was able to merge his style with my own? (Ugh Cj, excuses.) BUT I THINK THE BALLPOINT CROSS HATCH LOOKS NICE. Hahaha.
I sound like I’m talking to myself, forgive me.

I always said "Its the Indian, not the pana.” (For my friends across the globe, here’s a translation: "Its the Indian (archer), not the bow.”
Early in life, I developed the aversion to fancy tools – from that pencil case with eject hidden sharpeners, to the watercolor brush shampoos. The reason is very simple: we cannot afford it. So ever since, I’ve comforted my angsty juvenile (pa-art) self that I should just focus on my techniques, given a very limited range of art tools.
But with more time and experience, I learned that even a very skilled artist (or technician), if given faulty tools, the process of creation won’t be as inspired. Worse, the work won’t be as efficient. Now, I recognize the importance of having the best tools that you can have. (Pag-ipunan na lang. Investment rin ‘yan.)
My iPad has been a very helpful tool for my art (and rakets). I use it for viewing of reference photos when I’m painting or sketching. But the Paper App and the Jot Pro stylus helped me maximize my iPad more. Now I can literally write down and doodle my ideas on the iPad. And just when I thought my Jot Pro stylus is the best, I get introduced to the Jot Pro Touch.

Check out my new artwork using the Paper app and the Jot Pro Touch!

COLLABORATING WITH KEDS

I grew up wearing (and painting on) sneakers. So when Keds (which is my all-time favorite sneaker brand, no kidding, folks.) invited me to collaborate  with them last year, it was a no-questions-asked yes. This summer,  I collaborated with them again. And to make it extra exciting this time, it is for a cause!
This Saturday (June 2), pairs of Keds painted by me and the illustrious Soleil Ignacio,  will be auctioned in the Keds and Status Magazine’s Earthly Delights event. All proceeds will go to the Haribon Foundation.

This is my artwork for UP Cineastes’ Haute Auteur. They asked us to do an artwork with the theme Cinema/Philippine Cinema. I’ve been waiting for something like this because I’ve always loved film. (Indescribable passion, I guess. I may never be a film maker but I sure can appreciate good films.) And I found this as a great opportunity to share to everyone my ultimate, favorite film of all time - Mike De Leon’s Kisapmata. Para sa akin, pinanis ng Kisapmata ang film experience ko sa mga hollywood masterpieces, o miski pa ng French New Wave. ;) Personal na opinion ko lang naman. :)

I’ve been clueless of what to give to Wincy for his birthday. And of course, I got the limitation of distance - either I ship it to him or it should be something that I can email or upload online. Wincy loves detective stories, carnivals, film noir and of course, comics. And he’s been stressing out that he’s 30. But it doesn’t matter to me - he remains to be the boyish man I always had a crush on. So here’s what I’ve come up with - a 5-page graphic short story (hindi siya novel eh!).

Special thanks to Wincy’s best friend, Waps San Diego, for helping in writing this. :)

This is the movie poster I made for the indie film Suntok Sa Buwan directed by Bianca Catbagan and Jose Antonio De Rivera. I was inspired by the design sense of the 50s-60s boxing posters like the Thrilla in Manila poster.
Lucky me, I get to contribute work alongside other designers Paulina Ortega, Carina Santos, Rob Cham, Kristine Caguiat and Soleil Ignacio.
The film runs only ‘til tomorrow so catch it at these times:
Monday
SM North Edsa 6:15PM
SM Megamall 6:00PM
SM Mall of Asia 4:15PM
SM Manila 6:30PM
