I really didn’t make a mixtape for anyone but myself. I was 11 back when I used to wait for my favorite songs on the radio. I’d even do customized cassette labels and flaps, doodling and pasting photos. Mixtapes where my first typography projects.
But reading this made me remember Butch Walker’s song Mixtape. Mixtapes may be obsolete now, but the spirit behind it stays on. We compile songs, tell our stories through the words and melody of musicians we love. And sometimes, I feel mixtapes are like masks and armors.
Cassette from My Ex: Stories and Soundtracks of Lost Loves features stories of romance, crushes and mixtapes from: author Rick Moody, The Magnetic Fields’ Claudia Gonson, This American LIfe’s Starlee Kine, The New Yorker’s Ben Greenman, Blender Magazine’s Joe Levy, Improv Everywhere’s Charlie Todd, Mortified’s David Nadelberg– even a new story from the godfather of the genre, Rob Sheffied.
